The Esker Walk (easy, about 1km)
Starting around 1km north-east of the village, this short looped walk follows a glacial esker, a winding gravel ridge left behind by the last Ice Age. It is flat, family-friendly and ideal for buggies on dry days. Combine it with the village green, the playground and the free self-guided tour of the Heritage Centre for a relaxed family morning in Timahoe.
Fossy Mountain Walk (moderate, about 2 hours)
For a longer outing, the Fossy Mountain loop climbs through forestry and open ground above the village. Allow around two hours at an easy pace. Underfoot conditions can be soft after rain, so proper footwear is recommended. The reward is quiet countryside and wide views back across the Laois lowlands.
Cullenagh Mountain Walk (moderate to hard, 317m summit)
The most demanding of the three local walks, this route climbs to the 317-metre summit of Cullenagh Mountain. On a clear day the views take in a great sweep of the midlands. Bring water, rain gear and a charged phone, and allow a half day for the round trip.
A little further: the Slieve Bloom Mountains
Within a 30 to 40 minute drive of Timahoe, the Slieve Bloom Mountains offer some of the best walking in the midlands, including the popular Glenbarrow Waterfall loop and a network of waymarked trails through blanket bog and forest. Before you set off
Free parking is available in Timahoe village beside the Heritage Centre, and the Tower and Bean Café is open at weekends for coffee before or after your walk. Trails are in the countryside and conditions change with the weather, so check locally on the day, keep dogs on leads near livestock, and leave no trace.
