Visiting with Children, Schools, or a Group?
The self-guided tour is suitable for all ages. The interactive displays, including the recreated monk and Viking mannequins and the miniature village model, are particularly popular with younger visitors and school groups, and families are welcome to explore at their own pace with no time pressure.
For school groups and larger parties, the Centre also offers guided group tours and educational workshops tailored to the Irish primary and secondary school curriculum. Timahoe Heritage Centre is in Timahoe village, Co. Laois, R32 F627, approximately 20 minutes by car from Portlaoise and about 1 hour 20 minutes from Dublin via the M7. Free parking is available beside the Centre. See plan your visit for full directions.
Opening hours
Open Monday to Thursday 11am to 4pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am to 1pm. Closed Fridays. It is worth confirming hours on bank holidays before travelling.
Accessibility

On-site facilities
The community-run Tower and Bean Café operates on site at weekends, serving coffee and light refreshments.

Is the self-guided tour at Timahoe Heritage Centre really free?
Yes, admission is completely free. There is no entry charge for individuals, families or school groups visiting during regular opening hours. The Centre is funded by the local community with support from Fáilte Ireland.
Do I need to book in advance?
No booking is required. Simply arrive during opening hours and begin the tour straight away. If you are visiting with a larger group or school party, contact the Centre in advance so staff can prepare accordingly.
How long does the self-guided tour take?
Approximately 30 minutes at a steady pace. Many visitors stay up to an hour to explore the Round Tower, the village green and the medieval church ruins outside.

Indoor displays including interpretive panels, an audiovisual presentation, a recreated monk and Viking mannequins and a miniature village model, followed by the 12th-century Round Tower and the ruins of the adjacent medieval church outdoors.
